West End String Band

The West End String Band is dedicated to performing traditional bluegrass and old country songs with modern appeal.

Charlie McDaniel performed for 20 years with the N.C. Hickory Flat Band which won a top ten finish SPGMA World Championship. In the early 1990’s he moved to Greenville, SC, where he picked and sang for years at the Handle Bar Bluegrass Jam which established him in the Upstate music scene. Charlie‘s soulful singing puts the blues in any bluegrass jam.

During the peak jam years, Charlie met Jim Rollins, Kathy, and Matt Purinton.

Kathy took up the bass after being a die-hard bluegrass fan. She was a top notch percussionist in high school and won the Louis Armstrong Jazz award for piano.

Jim Rollins, a Clemson graduate, hails from the DC area, and currently lives in Simpsonville, SC. His style, though steeped in traditional bluegrass, is versatile and creative. Jim’s voice will pull your heartstrings. He has had the honor of being a Sunny Mountain Boy with Jimmy Martin, as well as playing tour dates with Dale Ann Bradley, The Blinky Moon Boys and many others.

Matt Purinton, of Six Mile, SC, adds his unique mandolin and deep rich baritone to the West End String Band sound. Matt previously played and toured extensively with Silver Dagger, Narrow Gauge Band, and the Ashley Caudill Band.

WESB has been blessed with the addition of Brain VanAntwerp on fiddle from St. Joseph, Michigan. Brian graduated Michigan State with a music education degree. He became fascinated with the fiddle at age four, and he hasn’t put it down since. Brian played with the popular Whiskey Pickers Band Lansing before his move to SC.
