Sean Mendes, was born on the island of Guam, to parents who were both serving in the United States Air Force. His Portuguese father from Rhode Island, and African American mother from South Carolina, exposed him at an early age to a family love of food and culture. With influences from Portugal, Spain, Italy as well as soulful southern cuisine, Sean created his first menu in the seventh grade. At age 16, he went to work as a butcher’s apprentice at his grandfather’s meat market, using that as a stepping stone to working in kitchens throughout the Lowcountry.
Sean began Roadside Seafood, a southern seafood inspired food truck, in the fall of 2012. The food truck became so popular and successful that a brick and mortar location, of the same name, followed a year and a half later. Since opening the doors, his food has earned him recognition by food critics from Post & Courier, Charleston Magazine and Charleston City Paper for his She-Crab Soup, Fried Shrimp, and Down Home Seafood. He has also appeared on The Cooking Channel’s “Junk Food Flip” and “Local Flavor” on Foodnetwork.com.
In 2016, Mendes opened Blues Burger Joint, a gourmet burger place that is already making a name for itself with its unique combinations. Sean hopes to continue partnering with local businesses and organizations, bringing opportunity, growth and positive impact to our community.
