Amy Fortes grew up in Lockport New York, just outside of Buffalo. With a vast amount of farm land, dairy farms, and corn fields in the surrounding area, and incredibly cold winters with a lot of snow, seasonality was something she learned as a child. Shucking corn for dinner was an almost nightly thing in the summer nights. She began her college days at Niagara County Community College where she started her studies to be a trauma surgeon. Realizing that it wasn’t her true passion she took a break and worked two jobs while living at home. She gained a fond respect and interest in the culinary world in both of the jobs she held and fell in love with the comradery of the kitchen. Returning to NCCC she completed an associate’s degree in culinary arts and moved to Charlotte, NC in 2006 to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Food Service Management. During her sophomore year she finished an externship with the Harper’s Restaurant Group at Zink American Kitchen, in uptown Charlotte. She was hired on to the company and spent 5 years with them working for Zink, Mimosa Grill, sous chef at Zink American Kitchen, Southpark as well as Upstream Seafood. She left Upstream to start what is now The Flipside Restaurant Group and Kumpfortes, LLC with her husband Jon Fortes, then Executive Chef of Mimosa Grill.
The Flipside Café in Fort Mill, SC opened on December 12, 2013 and has become a well-known staple in the community and has won awards like “Best of the Best: Grits” 2015 for Charlotte Magazine as well as “Best Unknown Restaurant”. She and Jon also have Flipside Catering Company and have recently (April 2, 2015) opened their newest venture, The Flipside Restaurant in Old Town, Rock Hill, SC. At all these locations Amy has made it her passion to not only cook and serve locally inspired cuisine, but to know the community that she is working for. She thrives on recognizing faces, favorite dishes or tables to sit at, and names of little ones that she gets to watch grow big into Flipside fans of their own. She grew from having a passion for preparing food to that of one for the relationship between great food and great people.
Most recently she was honored to be sous chefs alongside Jon to support Chef Joseph Cornett, exec chef of The Flipside Café, Fort Mill, SC where the three of them competed in The Fire in the City for Competition Dining and won the Charlotte Dining Series 2015.
She currently lives in Fort Mill, SC with her husband Jon and is a blessed step mom of his two wonderful sons Brennan and Dylan.
